USX feels awkward, even at medium/slow tempos

Description

This is a DPS exercise in Am that I'm trying to get up to ~140bpm. It is feeling so unnatural though, even at slower speeds (125 bpm in the video). My upstrokes feel awkward. My picking motion doesn't feel like it's going "in and out" but rather side to side and getting trapped with every stroke and it's just feeling unnatural. When I try this at higher tempos it feels like I'm just exacerbating the problem. Should I be over emphasizing my upstroke escapes? I can't really tell what kind of picking motion I'm using. The Di Meola tap test feels pretty natural, but I'm having a hard time translating that to actual picking.
