String Hopping
I am using my account for a personal student of mine. I cannot figure out what is going on with his picking. I suspect this is an extreme case of string hopping and would like your take and suggestions for a fix. It's worth mentioning that this student plays with a lot of tension. Frustration sets in quickly when things are not working. He is not looking to play at breakneck speed; however, even at slow tempos, his picking is choppy, inconsistent, and generally rough.

Ok, full disclosure here. I may have PTSD with this lick from not being able to play it properly 30 years ago. lol. This is quite literally as fast as I can play it without the lick falling apart. Picking fast on lower strings has always felt impossible to me, let alone fast across all strings. Sooooo, I decided to do 2 different "versions" of picking. First I tried to keep my hand in a more "ergonomic mouse" position. Did that a few times then switched it to what I have probably been doing for years, which seems like a DSX style switching to a USX on the downstroke string change. I think. Things I noticed with the ergonomic mouse version: Sometimes I feel I need to rock my forearm and pinky side palm a bit to smooth things out. It's a bit less comfortable but more consistent across strings. I hold the pick a little differently, but could get used to it. Actually, never realized how much I fiddle with the pick. I hold it loosely, but don't let go;) It just moves a lot. Observations with the "other" version: Hand tilts back and forth to accommodate moving across strings. Feels like it gets a bit string-hoppy. Especially if I speed things up... Feels like a lot of movement, but not sure if that actually matters. With both versions I feel like the flatter I hold the pick to a zero-degree pick slant, the more feel of string hopping I get, esp the faster I go. If you have suggestions for which to commit to I am game to try. Gonna give whatever style we land on a solid year to see if I can lay this picking thing to rest. lol Also, would love to know if your magnet is for sale somewhere. I'm not satisfied with the angles I get. Thanks again for any feedback. I do feel like I am sorting things out.

Tremolo Flatter Wrist V2
Hi there! I filmed this attempt shortly after feeling the motion kick in. It's still super awkward but I could feel the bridge on the pinky side of my palm. I am still unable to fully plant my palm but there was contact. Is this getting better and a thing that could be practiced? Or do I need my wrist flatter yet? Thanks for any feedback!

Yngwie Sixes RDT
This was challenging for me, especially given the RDT wrist position and tempo. Fast for me to pick every note. I can say I felt a level of articulation and control I've not felt before with my picking. However, changing strings is another story. Just want to see if I am doing this correctly. There is a muted version and an un-muted version. I lay my thumb heel down a bit to get the mute to go away. I still feel like the pinky side of my hand was mostly down on the bridge, creating that little tent you speak about, just not as much as the muted version. High E and B strings were not being touched. Can you tell if this turned my wrist position into DT? Thanks again for any feedback.

Tremolo RDT
This is my attempt at the tremolo RDT. Again, the timing is funkified, but to be honest I've discovered my hand sits like this 99% of the time. Ironically, the only time I catch myself doing the DT wrist motion is when I do a tremolo or attempt to play fast on the higher strings. The only reason I can think of that I didn't train this RDT motion, assuming it's correct, is early on I felt like the straight alternate-picking thing wasn't in the cards for me, so I developed some workarounds to compensate. Am I headed in the right direction with this?

Tremolo Flatter Wrist
I feel like this was a bit more flat. Struggled with the timing of all of the critique adjustment videos but I needed something to keep it from totally flying off the rails. LMK what ya think...

Tremolo picking
Vid 2 USX EVH style? Is this a viable option to pick through fast scale runs?

New to CTC and trying to figure things out. Is this DSX DiMeola style picking?
