The Paul Gilbert lick
Description
I've been practicing it for months and tried various approaches, but I've barely made progress. I do not think this is the end-all-be-all of picking, but it's very curious that after practicing for so long I haven't gotten any better, and I'm wondering if there are larger dragons about my technique hiding there. ### Description of videos 1. Tremolo picking at 190-200bpm, to provide a baseline. 2. "String changing motion I CANNOT do" -- playing the trouble lick at two speeds, 160bpm (sloppily) and at 0:38 at 144bpm (better). 3. "String changing motion I can do" -- a mirror version of the lick that has the same string-changing mechanic: whereas the Paul Gilbert lick has a singular note on a higher string, this one has it on a lower string. I'm infinitely better at this one so I added it in case there are hints here. 4. "Another way to practice" -- a modified PG lick: I tremolo-pick for longer on the lower string before trying the string change. The intention is to seat the correct motion on my wrist before throwing the string change curve ball. I'm better at this one but still have issues.Lesson Category
