Paralysis by Analysis on Pick, Grip, and Motion
Description
Hey All, First off, glad I finally have signed up for a subscription to the program. I've been aware of Cracking the Code for several years and have seen some of the videos on YouTube, but some recent frustrations finally got me to give it a try and I'm already very happy with the content in the Pickslanting Primer I've reviewed over the past 24 hours (up through Unlocking the Tremolo). Problem I'm having right now is I'm overthinking everything from these first few chapters. For the past several years, I have been pounding my head against the wall doing the traditional "play slow and up the metronome when you play it perfectly" for several different techniques. I feel incredibly slow in both my lead playing and my rhythm (my favorite genre is 80s thrash metal) despite the hours I have put in focusing on both of these skills. I have uploaded two videos. In one, I use my traditional grip I've been using for the past 6 years or so. In the other, I'm trying out the three-finger/middle finger grip. This latter interests me a lot primarily because two of my favorite guitarists (EVH and James Hetfield) both seem to use it. The middle finger grip seems a bit more chaotic, but I wonder if that is only because the other grip has years of experience behind it. My main questions right now: Should I stick with the usual grip or pursue this new one? Should I keep using a Jazz III pick (in the videos) or try a more traditional 351? I also can't tell if I'm doing the same motion in each or something slightly different. I know in both I seem to be using a bit of my elbow. Sorry for the long message on a first post, just felt the need to give some context. Looking forward to continuing through the program and learning from you all!Lesson Category
