I play the Gilbert descending sixes starting with a downstroke. To get this smooth I need a pretty clear DSX and upward pickslant (although this type of playing is pretty foreign to me so it's not very consistent). You can see at the end of the video I use my regular USX style picking, and it doesn't work at all for the lick.
