The Beat Orientation section gives the old “downstroke on the downbeat” rule a proper modern treatment involving three important variables: pickstroke-to-beat alignment, chunking, and escape motion. These three things are not the same. The combination you choose needs to match both the phrase you’re trying to play and the picking technique you actually have. Synchronicity gives you a simple checklist for making that decision.
The Devil’s Weapon: Steve Vai Sevens
In one of Cracking the Code’s earliest lessons, we profiled Steve Vai’s incredible performance in the movie Crossroads as the Devil’s henchman, Jack Butler. In Synchronicity, Tommo revisits Steve’s classic “Intimidation Lick” and its signature seven-note grouping. Here’s a short edit with the juicy parts:
