jfo's Technique Critiques
Technique critiques shared by jfo.
Hi, this is a continuation of https://troygrady.com/users/jfo/tc/614/
I'm really committed to working on this goal this winter. I've been concentrating on making my primary motion wrist based instead of forearm based and I feel a lot more comfortable with that, and overall it feels like a much more controlled and stable technique than what I used before. I can feel that upward escapes are within reach here.
I'd like to focus on incorporating that with the goal of moving towards a DBX semi-circular motion that will let me play up tempo bluegrass crosspicking eventually, so in other words, the main thing I need guidance on here is how to move forward with the base technique in the video in a way that unlocks (or at least doesn't block) up tempo crosspicking in a bluegrass style. Previous TC was really helpful, just starting a new one to have a new place to keep track.
Please let me know what to do next! Thanks a lot.

I'd like to get to 300 bpm straight alternate picking, I've been working more wrist and less rotational forearm because I feel like it gives me more precision and control with the pick.
I'm experimenting with this kind of moving laterally out of the string plane to minimize the hopping, and it's going pretty well, but still breaks down a bit around the high 200's. Need some extra eyes on it! Happy to elaborate or make more videos. Thank you!!

Hi, I have kind of what I understand to be a bit atypical DSX compound wrist/forearm motion:
https://forum.troygrady.com/t/first-magnet-footage/78684
and I am trying to train myself to use a more idiomatic to jazz USX motion. I also want to have a stronger alternate picking downstroke on downbeats style for better internal rhythm... I've been scared of focussing on alternate picking for a long time so I've done a lot of legato, which is cool and I like it, but again not so idiomatic to swing. It seems like a good opportunity to double up on this and work on a downward rest stroke at the same time, when I play in my "comfort zone" with DSX, I tend to do a lot of legato and not so steady non-alternate picking.
I don't want to focus on gypsy style (yet anyway) with sweeping and lots of double downstrokes, just straight alternate picking with some legato elision in complex passages to facilitate tricky string changes (without altering the up/down pattern/pulse). I'm kind of having trouble with the bounciness of the downward rest strokes, and I'm tending to exaggerate the motion at the moment.
