I’ve been working with the team for a while now and am checking in to get some feedback on what to keep working on. I’ve added a couple face on and picking hand videos for review. On a single string my triplets and chromatic 16ths feel better and faster and I think my picking technique is improving. My biggest struggle is the 16th not box that I’ve been practicing on adjacent strings. Example would be D string 7 to 9 then G string 7 to 9 & repeat. I’ve been stalled there for several months around 120 bpm and am not sure how to progress. It feels like my picking gets really hoppy at speed and doesn’t feel like my single string picking. It feels like I’m just stalled out here and don’t think I’ve improved in a couple months.
Overall any feedback on what to do next would be really helpful. Thanks!

Hi Joao,
It’s been a couple months since my last check in and I’d like some feedback on how I’m doing and what to work on. I’ve been trying to get my speed up working single string triplets, single string 16th chromatics, and a two string box (5 7 D & then 57 G as an example).
I think I’m seeing some progress but really feel like I’m hitting a wall with speed, especially with my fretting hand. Even when I just fret and don’t pick I’m really struggling to move faster than 140 bpm 16ths in that box drill. Is this a normal speed to have fretting problems or are you seeing anything specific that might be holding me back? What do you think I should work on next?

Hey Troy!
So it’s been a bit over a month & I’ve been working on the fast fretting stuff that you and I were working on back near the end of October. In case you don’t remember here’s the original thread: https://troygrady.com/dashboard/tc/364/
I decided to stick to the shape we were working on originally which I guess you’d call a C major shape (with CAGED as a reference) 3 NPS scale. I also have been working on faster pentatonic runs, mainly just up and down the scale getting used to changing strings on the fretting side. I have been working on evenness and speed because I was pretty slow when we first started & you & I uncovered that my slow fretting was the first thing holding me back. My end goal is to be fast enough that I don’t feel held back by my speed when I’m improvising & am not embarrassed by my speed anymore lol.
I’ve uploaded two new videos.
1. Playing through the 3 NPS scale at 190 bpm. After a month of practice this feels pretty solid & I think I can keep the pace up for a good amount of time
2. Playing through the 3 NPS scale at 210 bpm. This feels like it’s about my limit right now. I think it’s a decent jump after a month but there’s still room to improve
3. Playing through a position 5 & 1 shape pentatonic at 130 bpm. This one has been slower going but I was unable to do this at 100 bpm last month so it’s improving.
Overall I think it’s getting better but it’s time to check in with you & see what you think.

Goal: Check Fundamentals & get practice tips
Hi Everyone,
I’m a new member to the site & this is my first Technique Critique. I’ve gone through the Pickslanting Primer course & would really like some feedback on how I can get better.
I struggle picking at moderate speeds, especially when adding in string changes. I’m also not quite sure if I’m doing the motion correctly to start with.
My goal for right now is to really nail down the fundamentals & also get some feedback on how to practice this stuff to get better. I’m not looking to be a shred monster (yet) but it would really help everything if my top speed was upgraded.
I’ve uploaded a video here where I do some tremolo picking on one string only, then do a basic two note pattern going from the high e to b string. I wanted to show both versions because things change when I start incorporating string changes. For reference, I was trying to do double escape motion but it sure looks like USX on the tremolo picking & terrible string hopping when changing strings.
