WVNicholson's Technique Critiques
Technique critiques shared by WVNicholson.
This is really a follow on to the earlier technique critique at https://troygrady.com/dashboard/tc/495/ although that technique critique was closed before I had time to upload the requested videos. (So it may be worth referring to the old critique to see what has been done before, especially if a new instructor does this critique. It was possibly worth starting with a fresh critique, anyway, since there were a lot of picking related videos on the earlier part of that critique as well). So I have videoed the EVH-style and Di Meola-style tap tests for the longer time and without a metronome. Also, using a mouse wrist rest as discussed on the earlier technique critique. I've also uploaded a new video of the elbow tap test. (Videos of the other two motion tests are on the earlier technique critique; but for a relatively short duration and with a metronome.). Anyway, still trying to sort out my best motion as I was in the latter part of the earlier technique critique? Also, I have another question - is it useful to practise these motions much - apart from the occasional video to upload? I think it was suggested the motions are fairly basic to avoid some of the other complexities with picking and guitar playing, and are normally fairly easy for anybody. On the other hand, I think Troy suggested that he had found practising the forearm motion away from the guitar to be useful. (This feels fairly abstracted from actual guitar playing at this point which I would quite like to get back to.)

Okay, there potentially are multiple questions here which isn't considered ideal. (Also, just highlighting at the beginning that I may want to update six of these videos - as explained more fully in the last paragraph. This potentially requires more upload slots as deleting videos doesn't seem to consistently free them up, possibly always requiring intervention from staff, actually.)
Anyway, I've uploaded 7 videos made using the magnet: tremolo using wrist motion (I think); tremolo using elbow motion; doing a simple chromatic exercise with fretting fingers 1, 2, 3 and 4 using wrist motion; same exercise using elbow motion; a thirds sequencing exercise using my "normal" default picking (with economy picking); a 1-2-3 sequencing exercise using my "normal" default picking; and a 1-2-3-4 sequencing exercise. The last three were from a previous instructor who gave me these and some other exercises to help speed up my picking; but some of these exercises were potentially like a "torture test". (The others were a sort of Scottish trad/ bluegrass sounding exercise; and a single string lick or short melody based on Miserlou as in Pulp Fiction. The last two haven't been incorporated into my regular practice so much.) However, feedback on these - and how bad string hopping etc is - would be useful. With the first four exercises, it seems like i can get more speed with purely elbow motion; but wrist-based motion may be more versatile? Also, I thought I had tonal/ "choking up" issues with the elbow motion for the chromatic 1-2-3-4 exercise on my usual guitar (a Godin xtSA) (maybe the "garage spikes" problem or another problem with my hand position or inadvertent damping). This is possibly not so much the case for this strat copy that I have available while I'm on holiday.
After some previous uploads with different approaches to the recording and post-processing (in one case), I eventually settled on recording with OpenCamera with particular settings (and no post-processing) which gives the best results in terms of using all the fps my phone is capable of.
