Longer Down

Hi Troy, Your explanation 'made sense', thank you. The 'interference' is overwhelming I fear. Upon watching this one back today, after thinking that it was 'pretty good'.... I see how much movement there is in my fingers. This doesn't register when I play. I tell myself, "keep your fingers still"... and here is the result. I feel like I'm having a bit of success with the 'twisting' action of EVH. But in this clip, I still see 'spiking' on the upstroke. I don't know how I'm ever going to get rid of that?... "For both techniques, you have a lot of joint action going on: the forearm, fingers, and wrist are all moving. So far, our attempts to shut some of these off and get just one joint doing one thing haven’t worked very well." "In the first clip, you appear to have two forms: one where you anchor a little more on the thumb, and another where the hand is flatter on the strings." I think this is why I said earlier, I feel like I have 20 different techniques? So many different picking actions, but the crux of it seems to boil down to this terrible finger movement and spiking upstroke? It's so bizzare to see upclose. I have no idea I'm doing it, when I do it. Except, that it feels wrong. This is obviously why? "I think you can see the similarities in the overall form and motion." I watched both clips and I do see what you mean about his action and mine. So, in this clip, I 'did' focus on keeping the picking 'lighter' and smoother... and it kinda feels like it works... although, I've managed to obscure the pick with my thumb. "try extending to more groups of four - in other words, try adding more chunks." I did try to join a bunch of 4 note combos in this clip and keep it smooth.
And this is a brief go at the EVH hand 'shake' movelment.
I tried to emphasise the bigger pick stroke as advised.
I've tried the pointer finger practise.. I've been working on the 'chunking' synchronicity... (which feels like it has improved my picking?)... sometimes.... I 'feel' like "I've got it!!"..... but, on review of this video, I 'still' see my fingers 'pull up'... almost like a 'giddy-up' weird movement... maybe I need to practise with the magnet attached and view on my computer live?... One of the most difficult things about this upload process, is trying to 'edit' my video down to 20"... The phone interface is atrocious. Anyway, I managed to upload this one before the critique closed out. I see the angle is a bit too close as well.
Action
Again, I tried the 'flappy' motion away from the strings and brought it closer... but, it seems to fall apart. All the words make sense. The actions don't follow however. In slow motion, I see the weird 'rolling' of my wrist in the upward stroke. It's bizarre.
I tried using the 'flappy' hand away from the strings and then bring that motion to the strings. I understand, (from your descriptions) 'what' I'm doing. I just can't seem to 'correct' it?... I default to "what is comfortable" I'm guessing? Watching my hand in slow motion is like a train wreck. I 'see' the up/down 'door knocking' action of my hand in this one.
I feel like Im going backwards? My playing feels worse than ever
Man, that felt so awkward and even watching it back, I saw how floored it was. I don't even know how I developed that up strike that doesn't work. I hardly down strike anything. I can't even mimic a straight action ? that felt bad and looked worse
I'm still working hard at trying to do more of the 'hand-shake' action towards the volume pot. Really inconsistent.
I've tried to mimic your sweep action and it is better. But, Im still missing something?
I thought I'd improved my garage spikes but upon revisiting a slow mo, it seems I'm still struggling with the upstroke?
Another version
This feels somewhat natural and faster
This one feels comfortable, despite all the stuck picks
