Description

This bundle includes our interview with Joscho Stephan, as well as two interviews with experts on Django and Gypsy history and culture.

Joscho Stephan

Joscho takes Gypsy founding father Django Reinhardt’s famous adaptation of downward pickslanting mechanics and enhances it with his own turbocharged take on high-speed playing.

In our interview with Joscho, we discuss the classic Gypsy flexed-wrist approach to forearm rotation, including a closeup look at Joscho’s amazing chord tremolo, multi-downstroke arpeggios and scales, and more. And we also discuss Joscho’s thoroughly modern two-way sweeping and legato passages that would be equally at home on any rock stage.

The Joscho Stephan Interview includes 1.5 hours on core elements of the Django style, including the rest stroke, forearm rotational picking, chord tremolo, multi-downstroke arpeggios and scales, two-way sweeping, and more. It also comes with 60 slow-mo video examples and complete tablature in Guitar Pro PDF.

Gypsy History and Music with Siv Lie

We spoke to Siv Lie, Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Music at NYU, about the cultural context of Romani/Gypsy music, Django’s singular influence on the genre, her research and fieldwork in France, and how Gypsy jazz has evolved post-Django.

Django and Gypsy Jazz with Dr. Ben Givan

Benjamin Givan is Associate Professor of Music at Skidmore College and author of The Music of Django Reinhardt. We spoke with him about his studies of Django’s music and it’s origins in jazz tradition, Django’s musical evolution, the improvisatory vocabulary of Gypsy jazz, and how he transcribed 200 Django solos.
